Important distances between Simla Kullu Manali are:

Delhi to Shimla                 370 km (9 hours by road)

Delhi to Manali                 570 km (14 hours by road)

Chandigarh to Shimla        120 km ‘(4 hours by road)

Chandigarh to Manali        320 km (9 hours by road)

Kalka to Shimla                 96 km (3 1/2 hours by road)

Shimla to Manali              270 km (8-9 hours by road)

Shimla to Kullu                 230 km (7-8 hours by road)

Traveling time remains a big factor and entire day has to be kept for traveling from one destination to the other.

Since Shimla happens to be the nearest destination from Delhi and Chandigarh, traveling to Shimla first is advisable.

Places to visit in Shimla

Minimum stay of two nights at Shimla is required. On day one after reaching Shimla explore The Mall road in the evening. The Mall is an open air shopping street in the city center with lots of shops and restaurants. Evenings are quite lively on The Mall at Shimla.

Next day visit Kufri located at a distance of 16 km ahead of Shimla. Kufri was once famous for it’s Ski slopes. Now the slopes have all vanished. Kufri offers a great view of Himalayan snowline. Kufri also has a Himalayan Nature Park which houses some of the animals and birds found in the region. Enjoy a few touristy things, like the yak and pony rides around Kufri.

The highest point around Kufri is the Mahasu peak. One can trek to the peak or hire ponies.

Kufri becomes crowded during season time resulting in frequent traffic jams.

Around Shimla, one can visit the Jakhu hill, famous for the Hanuman Temple with lots of monkeys thronging the place. Vice Regal Lodge, the residence of the Viceroy during British Raj now housing the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies should also be explored.

Naldehra, once famous for the golf course is now off bound for tourists. Earlier the road used to go through the golf course but now the area has been sealed with a new road built bypassing the golf course.

In Shimla, visit Kufri during the first half and then visit Jakhu Hill and Vice Regal lodge.

Shimla to Manali journey

Shimla to Manali journey winds up through Mandi and Kullu. If one leaves early from Shimla one can also visit Manikaran. The route to Manikaran bifurcates from Bhuntar. Bhuntar to Manikaran is a 35 km drive.

Places to visit in Manali

After reaching Manali, do not rush to Rohtang straight as the journey is quite demanding. Instead explore local Manali and Naggar. Hadimba Temple, Vashisht and Buddhist monastry can be explored in the first half of the day around Manali and then visit Naggar, 22 km from Manali. Drive from Manali to Naggar is quite beautiful. Naggar is a small village famous for Roerich Art Gallery. Spend some time at Naggar and later come back to Manali.

Next day visit the Rohtang Pass. Rohtang is located 52 km from Manali. It takes 3 hours to reach Rohtang. Due to frequent landslides and traffic jams, it may take longer to reach Rohtang. If one is visiting Manali during season time it is always better to leave Manali early by 7 am to reach Rohtang well in time.

While visiting Rohtang Pass, one can visit Nehru Kund, Gulaba, Rahla Fall, Marhi and Rani Nallah which lies enroute.

Rani Nallah has been a major landslide point this season because of the melting snow.

While returning back visit Solang which is famous for joy rides and mini Kufri like feel.

In Manali, visit local Manali and Solang on day two and Rohtang Pass and Solang on day three.

Simla Kullu Manali itinerary can be clubbed as:

Day 1 – Arrival at Shimla. Evening on the Mall road

Day 2 – Kufri and local Shimla sightseeing

Day 3 – Shimla to Manali journey. Detour to Manikaran if time permits. Evening at Manali

Day 4 – Local Manali sightseeing and excursion to Naggar.

Day 5 – Visit Rohtang Pass and Solang

Day 6 – Departure from Manali.

If one has more days in hand plan to add more days at Shimla or Manali at will. While returning stay at Chandigarh for a night and explore Chandigarh.
