Dalhousie

Dalhousie is one of the dazzling hill stations in Himachal Pradesh. It was established in 1854 by the British Empire in India as a summer retreat. The town was named after Lord Dalhousie. He  was the British Viceroy in India during that time.

Old world charisma Dalhousie

Dalhousie is built on and around five hills-  Kathlog, Tehra, Bakrota ,Patreyn, and Balun. It is located on the western edge of the Dhauladhar mountain range of the Himalayas. It is surrounded by the beautiful landscape of snow-covered peaks. It is situated at 6000-9000 feet above sea level.

The best time to visit is in the summer. Dalhousie is a doorway to the Chamba. This place is a repository of traditional Hindu culture, art, temples, and handicrafts. Chamba is the heart of this culture.

Ravi and Chandrabhaga (Chenab) two of the main rivers of HP cross this area. Several hydroelectric projects and dams are being developed around. There are a number of national forest and wildlife sanctuaries located around. There are many trekking routes for serious as well as budding trekkers.

Dalhousie is full of old world charisma. It has charismatic colonial buildings, including some beautiful churches.  It holds lasting echo of the Raj era. It is spread in an area of 14 sq. km. The town surrounded by varied flora – pines, deodars, oaks and rhododendron.

The distance of Dalhousie from Delhi is 485 km and 52 km from Chamba by road. Pathankot, 80 km away is the closest railhead. The nearest airport is at Gaggal in Kangra. It is located at a distance of 135 km.  Taxis and buses are easily available.

Although summer is the best time for visiting but for snow and winter lovers this is one of the best place to visit. The temperature can fall to freezing point during winters so heavy woolens are required in this season. Although the summer temperature is mild but it can fluctuate so light woolens / cottons are recommended to have.  Shimla to Dalhousie is one of the major routes for tourists.
